The Mechanic

Jason Statham plays a hitman in his latest film The Mechanic (not to be mistaken with The Machinist as I got mixed up).  The mechanic is a man who fixes things, but not your usual fare as you've probably guessed. Statham's character is Arthur, a fixes situations by killing someone without anyone "knowing he was there". The story really gets rolling when he gets the assignment to kill his mentor Harry (played by Donald Sutherland) who appears to have put the company in jeopardy. After Harry's death, he himself becomes a mentor to Harry's son, Steve (well played by Ben Foster), teaching him his job and saving him from himself when Steve goes after people that he thinks killed his father.  The irony is of course, we know who killed Harry.  The two men get along well, but no job Arthur gives Steve goes well, nor do we expect it to.  Steve is pretty much your basic screw up.

Without giving more away, the rest of the plot is pretty much predictable if you've watched a fair number of movies.  They won't get along forever and as they become targets themselves, all hell is going to break loose. We know Steve still wants revenge on his father's killer. But we know Arthur is still at the top of his game. There has to be a resolution in this and we all know how it will end. There are a few red herrings planted here and there, but if you don't analyze this much further, it is an enjoyable film (except for the gory moments).

3.5/5
