$28 International Fare
Nestled next to the Opus Hotel, this really artsy den resembled almost a tiny black and paint spattered warehouse. With picnic tables and low cost patio furniture to boot, it was interesting, with a small dash of eclectic.
Between my two friends and I, we covered most of the dine out menu. While the portion sizes weren't the biggest, they felt (almost) sufficient, depending on your appetite.
Out of the 3 starters:
1) Bianco Truffle Risotto
2) Italian Onion Soup
3) Smoked Tuna Carpaccio ‘Nicoise’ poached quails egg, capers, olives, baby tomato vinaigrette
The best was probably the smoked tuna carpaccio (definitely most value if you like that). Presentation was great, though the tuna was a bit on the soft side. Risotto was alright, it looks more like oatmeal with some brown fungus substance on top. If I had to eat risotto again, I would go back to Aqua Riva. Last but not least the onion soup reportedly was very close to the French onion soup, only this one includes mushrooms.
Main course selections:
1) Open face turkey sandwich
2) Lobster and crab mac&cheese
3) Steak Diane
I had the mac&cheese, there's something about lobster and crab. Don't be put off by the portion size (or lack of), if you've got a small appetite, the cheese will fill you up. It was accompanied by a Hennessey lobster bisque which was on the bitter side for me. Needless to say that sat untouched. Aside from that there was a generous amount of lobster and crab. The greens was a baring disappointment as it only accentuated the emptiness left on the plate.
We also ordered the steak, nothing special really. Better place to go for steak would be the Keg.
The funny thing is nobody in the room ordered the open face turkey sandwich, which imaginably would've been the most filling, as it also comes with creamy potatoes and butternut squash. I'm serious - nobody, we looked around us, but all the tables were a mix of mac&cheese, and steak. Strange, if anybody does try this restaurant and orders the turkey, let me know - it's the only item that didn't hit our table.
Dessert-wise, it was either the apple pie with cheddar cheese ice cream or the baked cookie. Definitely go with the apple pie (it's not printed on the menu, but is listed online). The cookie is a bad choice...bad because you can easily EASILY eat this at home. Take out a cookie and top with one scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's also not a huge cookie, just a normal sized Subway cookie.
The cheddar cheese ice cream isn't very cheesy at all, it tastes more like a light cream cheese. This dessert does make you work for it though, the pie crust is a bit tough and you have to saw through it with your spoon.
All in all here's what it comes down to:
Food: so so
Service: great
Recommend: no
