Society

$18 / American
plus $5 add on's

Just after sampling Sanafir the other night, we hit up Society, another one of the Glowbal Restaurant Group's establishments. It was fun and hip, serving comfort food with a little extra.  The space is comfortable and funky with its pink chandeliers. The Canucks game was also on, so that was a bonus.  One really nice thing right off the top was the music level which was perfect and didn't get so loud that you'd have to shout at your friends.

We actually started off with Kobe meatballs (at least I think our waitress said Kobe), complimentary.  It was piping hot and tasty, a little on the spicy side with the sauce, so for those who don't handle spice well, be forewarned.

With only 2 of us dining tonight, we unfortunately missed some items on the menu. Having been a bit spoiled at Sanafir, we also opted out for add on's tonight: Onion Rings and a Poutine - both of which sadly (or not) we had to pack home untouched, because that's how filling and tasty this comfort food was. But as our waitress said, it's comfort food also enjoyed in front of the tv.

For starters:
1) Split Pea Soup
2) Chopped Salad

Option 3 was a beet salad, but alas, I'm not fond of beets. The chopped salad was pretty fresh and plentiful, ingredients and portion-size. If I were a small eater, it'd be enough. Packed with chicken, bacon, baby tomatoes in a light dressing that reminded me of coleslaw. Yum!

Mains:
1) Salisbury Steak
2) Ahi Tuna with peas, celery, mushrooms in macaroni mixed in a 4 cheese sauce

I had originally planned to order steak, but their steak is more meatloaf than steak. So since my friend ordered, I was able to try a bite - yummy. It was tender and rather juicy. You also get 3 good sized pieces, though 2 is probably only what most of us would need.

My ahi tuna was quite nice as well, it could have used a bit more tuna flavor, but I suppose that's ahi.  The macaroni though, wow, probably some of the best "mac&cheese" I've ever had.  The 4 cheese sauce is quite light (though still filling) and infused with peas and mushroom flavor. It comes with a side green salad that was mostly leaves - not really worth eating, but you'll leave more because you're already full.

We were feeling pretty stuffed at this point, but we had earlier spied out the dessert at the table next door.  The description on the menu did not quite prepare us for this floof. It's described as "The Way dark chocolate cake, butter cream filling and vanilla gelato".
Nowhere were we warned about the...COTTON CANDY that adorned the top of the cake.  Talk about dressing up the chocolate cake. It was quite fitting actually as it matched the chandelier.  I have to admit though, the guys next to us had better looking desserts.  I probably should have asked to take a photo of their desserts instead of ours. On second thought, hand over your desserts guys! No phone numbers, just the desserts =) The cake was practically perfect! Not too much cream, not dry at all.

At the end of it all:
Food: very good
Service: great
Recommend: YES

For only $18 - this place is a steal! It's also right in the heart of Yaletown and close to lots of transportation points and of course, downtown itself. Great food, great service, why not? I'd love to try their milkshakes, or perhaps spiked milkshakes and pizza.
