Every year there's at least one best picture nominee I wouldn't see by choice - usually just for personal preference. This year was no exception, and True Grit took the prize. I just was not very interested in the story nor the genre, but having said that and with the help of a group outing, off to the Wild West I went.
A 14 year old girl, a US Marshall and a Texas ranger come together in the manhunt for one man who killed her father, who is now being pursued by the Marshall, and is also wanted for killing a senator. Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, and Matt Damon come together as an unlikely trio that feed off each other well, each providing a purpose to the story and bantering with each other. Some may question why Steinfeld was nominated in the Supporting category when she should be a lead, but perhaps that was the way to go to get some recognization for the amazing work by this teenaged actor. The script is quite light hearted given the subject matter of hunting down a murderer, and sprinkled with both verbal and physical jokes. The cinematography was beautiful, lending to a very smooth and engaging edit.
I have to admit, the first hour didn't really grab me, but once they got deeper into the hunt, the more invested we become and find this gets better as it goes along.
3.5/5
