An event past, but something to look forward to next year: Spot Prawn Festival at Vancouver's Fisherman's Wharf. Despite the drastic changes in weather last Saturday - rain, sun, pouring rain, we managed to find a good time slot to slip in for a sampling of spot prawns, wine and beer. There's also coffee for those not inclined to sip on alcoholic beverages. For $10 a plate, it's a good hour or so to spend out doors in, and despite the long lines, it moves fairly quickly. Word of advice, go through the food line and the drink line before sitting down with your food, otherwise it would be pressed to get back into line.
Sides with our prawns included tomatoes, couscous, mushrooms and a bun. The mushrooms very quite flavorful, and the couscous, yum! Not normally a couscous fan but this one gets my thumbs up. What about the prawns you ask? Of course they were good =) Juicy and fresh, it left us wanting more (they only give you 3 sadly) but you can buy some off the boats that just came in. As for a dipping sauce? We ended up with the Tequila Lime which is very refreshing and vastly (appreciatively) different from our normal ol' soy sauce when eating this dish as part of a Chinese meal.
After making our way back into line thanks to some lovely people who graciously let us in in front of them. They had just gotten their food so technically we weren't jumping the line. We did feel bad though when several other people (strangers) joined us in front of them because they had been in the same boat, gone out of line to enjoy the food on the pier before getting back in line. As a result the line clogs a big at the beverages, but the wait is not too bad.
With a choice of 3 wines: pinot gris, rose, and riesling. Being the sweet tooth I am, I highly recommend the riesling. Word of advice though, it's super sweet after you try the pinot gris. Not much of a beer person myself, tried a sip of the cream ale (draught on the left), but it didn't change my mind. Skipped the coffee as well, so anyone who did try it, please share your thoughts.
All in all a good couple of hours of laid back West Coast-ness. If I had gone straight home after, would've joined the long line for fresh prawns, but alas. This line I don't think moved as fast.
