After cutting through choppy history, the plot of X Men first class settles down into a fun action film sprinkled with the odd funny joke. Going from the childhood of both Magneto and Xavier that gives us a great insight into the back stories of how Magneto and Xavier came to be who they are. A bit surprising to see young Xavier as quite the ladies man and loving it, but James McAvoy does a pretty good job balancing the fun side and the serious side of Xavier.
Aside from a script that moves effortless from plot point to plot point, the rest of the cast plays their part well in the first battle mutants take part in. Kevin Bacon shines as the evil Shaw/Schmidt who first exploited Magneto's abilities and then plotted to trigger World War III by pitting American missiles vs Russian missiles.
With the beginnings of X Men explained, and the stage set for the sequels we've already seen, this is a fun watch to see how it all started. From the antics of the newly recruited mutants to seeing how everyone hones their power and pick their sides, X Men First Class is worth your money with good effects and strong soundtrack.
For those in Vancouver who don't need a giant Cineplex screen, this film plays at Empire Theatres in Oakridge where tickets are only $5.99 on Tuesdays =) It's also an 8pm start currently so you can have a good dinner beforehand too, and it's not too late to go out after.
3.5/5
