Rachel Weisz plays Kathryn Bolkovac in a real life story about the corruption and human trafficking taking place in Bosnia after the war. A policewoman contracted there to help keep the peace, Bolkovac stumbles upon a ring or trafficking that incriminates multiple levels of government and diplomats that cannot be charged. Wanting to rescue these girls who were conned and tricked, Bolkovac faces insurmountable walls of obstacles. Able to trust a limited few, her frustrations grow against the inability to rectify the situation and give the girls justice. After her dismissal, she realizes the only thing she can do is take the evidence to the world and government departments outside of Bosnia, so that the world can demand answers and solutions.
Weisz turns in a solid performance in this emotionally and dark violent event where the filmmaker doesn't hold back in showing the cruelty and violence the victims are subjected to. Not a film for the weak or in denial, The Whistleblower will stay with audiences as it strikes a deep chord against trafficking not only in Bosnia but worldwide, including here in Canada.
Word is that the distributor of the film feels so strongly about this project that proceeds from each ticket sold will be donated to Beyond Borders, an agency fighting trafficking. A few Oscar rumors are also swirling for Weisz.
