Paul

If you've watched Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (Run Fatboy Run was not as good), then you know the calibre of comedy to expect from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.  The British duo's latest is set in the USA where they play two friends going on a road trip of America's alien spottings and this is the most hilarious film yet.  When they come across Paul the alien and help him find his way home, you almost get the feeling you're watching ET but for adults. Instead of a young alien befriending a boy, you've got a smart-mouthed but good natured alien needing help from two "nerds". For more on the plot - imdb it.

I'm not sure if the ET feeling was intended or just me, but either way, the story is a refreshing take on getting aliens home (unlike those other obvious and not so great recent remakes - you know which ones I'm talking about). Everything is set up without being two obvious and it's really about everything on a common goal as they make new friends and make their way to the departure point, throw in well timed and appropriate jokes (actual and alluded to) plus pop culture drops here and there, you'll be laughing throughout =D  There are other familiar elements to Pegg and Frost's previous films -- Pegg gets the girl, she's never outstandingly pretty but very real, they have their distinct differences, and the ending complements the beginning without dragging on - watch the credits, you'll be left wanting more.

Acting wise, they're on top of their game with a full fledge of supporting cast that are perfect for their roles. Seth Rogan is fantastic as Paul, Sigourney Weaver outstanding as The Big Guy (even though we only see her briefly) to mention a few. Jason Bateman - great job, just when you think he's out - he takes it a different way.

Loaded with chases and fun characters, this is a must see over and over again. Everything and everyone has its place and when you go back, you'll catch more of what you missed the first time around. Overall great fun, great story, great cast, just great fun =)

It's not an entirely perfect film though (I doubt many are), some may find parts of the ending a bit predictable and abrupt, "huh" - but keep an open mind and you'll probably just accept it.

5/5 *****  I would most definitely watch this again in theatres. There are some adult jokes and religious discussions (though in the tone of the film) so if you're sensitive to that, heads up.
