Johnny Depp returns as Jack Sparrow in this latest adventure to find the Fountain of Youth, travelling with Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) throws in his leg for the film and we have definitely found ourselves on a whole different adventure.
Depp delivers as Sparrow as he tangos with Cruz who more than keeps up. She keeps you guessing, but the chemistry comes across. Newcomers Kevin McNally and Astrid Berges-Frisbey do a good job as Phillip and Syrena. Some complain their romantic relationship is a weak attempt at replacing the love story previously provided by Keira Knightley's Elizabeth and Orlando Bloom's Will, but it's a nice distraction from the lack of epic battles. It's also logical in a forced kind of way - and not everything is logical.
The script stays focused on the quest for the fountain and does a great job of not letting the convenient romance between Phillip and Syrena take over. Angelica and Jack's previous romance adds some tension yet endearment to them, something likely the next film will exploit.
Overall it's a fun film but not great. The plot cruises by and lacks epic battles. The last battle in the Fountain of Youth is anti-climactic and leaves lots of questions, one of them why Syrena helped Jack at all. Whether to see this film in 2D or 3D is up to you. The extra $3 does add to the experience as Jack flies off the screen, as well as daggers and swords that aim right at you. Also, how else would you see trailers in real 3D?
