When I first heard of "Friends with Benefits", I thought it was going to be another "No Strings Attached" which was an okay movie. It was a similar premise, two people randomly agree to a sexual relationship without delving into a serious relationship with each other. The natural plotline then of course has the leads realizing that they are falling in love with each other and everything works out in the end. So why see "Friends with Benefits"?
Well now, that's what I thought, but there's something about "Friends with Benefits" that makes it better. It's not just that it stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, who display much more chemistry than Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. It's not that it's more glamourous with the LA vs New York angle. It's about more likeable characters who we connect with, understand their past and how that drives their present characteristics and viewpoints, and how we really want them to work out. It's about that realization and making that commitment and pursuing it, making small moments large events. And it's about the strength of the friendship necessary for a relationship to work out.
It's generally well written and flows well with lots of jokes and laughter packed in. So if you're looking for a new romantic comedy this summer, take a chance with this one.
