VIFF Day 10; Black Bread, White

Just the two films to open Turkey weekend here in Canada, and another 2 more for tomorrow before back at it 5 films per day. Just found out Tyrannosaur, of which I've heard great reviews now has an added screening, so stoked about that. Leaving the crowds as the rain began to fall this evening, here's a look at today's viewings. I showed up extra early to make sure I got a ticket to the advanced sold out Black Bread in a small-ish theatre and luckily no rush line was needed for me.

BLACK BREAD (Spain)

Set in Fascist Spain, Andreu, a young boy, slowly uncovers family secrets and decides to move onto a better life following the execution of his father. A little bit of mysticism but nowhere near the scale of Pan's Labyrinth. The strength of this is in the acting from the whole cast, but especially our young protagonist. Cinematic as we've come to expect from Spanish films of quality, especially one that's won multiple Goya Awards

3.5/5 plays Monday October 10th at 930pm and Friday October 14th at 1140am

WHITE (South Korea)

Finally a South Korean film this year worth applauding (at least in my opinion) and sometimes South Korea rivals Japan in horror films. I'm normally not a horror fan at all, but this one was really good. There's enough light elements for the non hardcore horror viewer, but enough horror that you will want to shut your eyes. Girl band Pink Dolls are fading in the spotlight, but the discovery of a song White soon propels them back into popularity. As catchy as it is though, White is a curse, haunted by a ghost who takes out anyone wanting to be the lead. Senior band member Eun-Ju takes it upon herself to investigate the curse and put the ghost at rest. Of course nothing ends well, but it's interesting to see how Eun-Ju evolves and the outcome of it all. Great soundtrack for those that like pop. Not exactly your typical horror film.

4/5 doesn't play again at VIFF but perhaps one day it'll play in Vancouver again
