Looking forward to full days of films going for the rest of VIFF as a good Turkey dinner does wonders to supplementing the VIFF diet of sandwiches, sandwiches and sandwiches. As VIFF ends this Friday, more and more reviews will be for films no longer screening, but hopefully the good ones will come back. I also encourage you to check out some films at VIFF if you haven't already been.
BUDDHA MOUNTAIN (China)
A beautiful little film about strangers whose lives become connected when they really need each other in their respective lives and how they are touched by it. Chinese star Fan BingBing stars as a landlady who rents her place to two young men and their female friend. While at first hostile and cold between them (they even steal her money out of need), leads to the birth of a caring relationship where each side becomes a surrogate for the other when the trio saves their landlady's life when she attempts suicide. She becomes like a mom to them, sharing their lives while they become her children, helping her find happiness once again.
3.5/5 plays Monday October 10th at 9pm
ALPS (Greece)
A group of people who take the place of dead people in order to help their families cope with grief is the subject of director Yorgos Lanthimos' (Dogtooth) latest film. An interesting concept that sadly ends in a "what just happened" moment. The lead character, a nurse, doesn't exactly garner sympathy as we have little to no understanding of her motivations. Why does she cheat the group out of a job, was it just for money or something more? When the leader finds out and kicks her out, she stubbornly clings to her cases, but to no avail. In the end, no resolution is apparent aside from a scene that seems to be an alternate version of the opening scene.
2/5 plays Thursday October 13th at 9pm
