July 1942, Sarah Starzynski locks her younger brother in a closet to save him from rounded up by French forces. Their family is Jewish and many of their fellow Jews were headed down the road to death during World War II. What follows are the interwoven stories of how Sarah manages to survive in her quest to free her brother, what happened to her, and the modern day story of the journalist whose husband's family now owns their old flat.
Based on the book by Tatiana de Rosnay, this is a moving adaptation anchored by Kristin Scott Thomas's Julia who is determined to find the truth. Poignant and powerful with yet a different story and characters living in a past time of horror. This is history and a story that keeps the past alive.
